Get adequate warranty information before you buy. Quality upholstered furnishings should carry warranty on springs, foam, frame, and craftsmanship. Beware of any product that is not backed by a reasonable warranty – this could be a sign of poor quality components. (Click on Warranty for details on Mayo furnishings.)
Be careful not to fall in love with a fabric to the neglect of good construction. Your upholstery pieces support your full body weight and must have quality components to give lasting wear. (See our Construction Features for details on Mayo quality components.)
When shopping for several items, consider buying your sofa first and then adding other pieces as they relate to your sofa choice in style, size and color.
Arm yourself with measurements before you start shopping. Room dimensions and a clear understanding of what floor space is available are critical. Once you have chosen a piece, use newspaper or craft paper to make a template the exact size of the item and lay it on the floor. This will give you a good idea of how the piece will relate to other items in the room and to walkways.
Take samples of carpet, paint, wallpaper and/or drapery fabrics with you to coordinate your color scheme. Humans actually have no accurate color memory and there are thousands of shades of every color out there! Keep your samples in a folder or tote for easy portability.
Keep in mind how the room will be used. Family rooms that take daily wear and tear will need durable, practical fabrics and frames. Save more delicate fabrics and frame styles for light use rooms such as formal living areas.
Consider other functions the furniture must perform. Do you need additional sleep space for guests? Would a chair sleeper be a multi-functional choice for home office seating? How about a chair-and-a-half to accommodate a child and adult?
Always “try on” the furniture the way you will actually use it. This means lying down if the sofa is your favorite spot to nap, or sitting with one foot curled under you if that is your favorite reading position.
